Anambas Islands, Riau Islands, Indonesia

A playground of over 300 hectares, 3 crystal blue lagoons, 13 powder white beaches, lush jungle canopy for trekking and more importantly a philosophy of environmental and conservation policies, Bawah Island is a project of love to integrate people with nature and will set the benchmark for future destinations around the region.

Bawah is a group of 6 islands located at the southern end of the Anambas Islands (which is made up of 295 islands of which only 19 are occupied) approximately 150 nautical miles north-east from Singapore.

Bawah was uninhabited with the nearest population 30 nautical miles away.

There are coral reefs surrounding the islands that provide excellent opportunities to snorkel & dive and there is a unique variety of marine life.

The islands surround three lagoons the largest of which is over 900m long.

A shallow channel through the outer reef into the second largest of the lagoons offers protected deep water anchorage.

The third lagoon runs North South with a large Mangrove on both sides giving home to extensive wildlife of mudskippers, numerous fish, crabs & birdlife.

There are 35 stand-alone suites and bungalows in this pristine destination.

Life on Bawah is simple – live with the natural surroundings – go with the flow – dress simple.

There’s no end of adventures to be had; hike through the rainforest past monitor lizards and a 2,000 year-old palm to the entirely empty Coconut Beach; windsurf, kayak or paddle-board between five islands, stopping at a cave to see hundreds of bats swirl into flight; snorkel among parrotfish, clownfish and turtles.

Or just loll on the sand with a book from the library.

Most activities are included in the rate, as are daily treatments at the Aura spa, such as yoga, pilates, meditation, facials and massages.

Located on a small archipelago, the Bawah Island Resort is a remote paradise off the coast of southern Malaysia. Bawah is not just a new resort – it is a new destination in the world.
The Anambas Archipelago is 295 islands were only 19 are inhabited and fishing is the primary industry – Bawah is the first hotel / resort in the region and is a pioneer in opening this region.
The remote Anambas Archipelago, in which the resort sits, was one of Indonesia’s first marine conservation areas.
Visitors arrive via Singapore, travelling north by ferry (1 hour) to the island of Batam, before hopping on a private seaplane for the 1 hour 15 minutes ride across the South China Sea.
Total journey time is about 3 hours – or you could glide in on a private yacht.
Kayaking
They have a selection of kayaks and stand up paddle boards at the Boathouse for your use.
The beach attendant will assist you to select a kayak, and provide you with life jackets, paddles and a water bottle.
Recommended routes include:
– Circumnavigation of Bawah will take about 2 hours depending on how long you take to stop and explore.
– To the East Side of the lagoon, stop off at Pulau Merbau, then paddle towards Pulau Sanggah. Stop at the beach on the South West corner and pull your kayak up on the beach then walk over to the long beach on Sanggah’s East side. Take a walk along this 400m long beach. Takes about 2 hours.
– To the west side of the lagoon around Pulau Elang to the barrier islands and mangrove trees. Takes about 1 hour.
Snorkeling
Snorkeling just off the jetty is one of the must do activity in Bawah Island.
There is a whole world of fish and corals down there.
It is best done in the middle of the day when the sun is close to its Zenith as the colours of the reef and the reef fish are at their brightest, but it’s a good time anytime from 10am to 4.30pm.
From mid to low tide it is easy to swim out to the reef straight off the beach but we recommend that you enter and exit the sea using swim ladders on each of the 2 pontoons at end of the jetty.
Pick up your mask, fins, snorkel and bag when you arrive and keep them with you in the bay of your villa.
The resort also runs snorkeling trips to the outer reef by boat, look out for the timings on the Activities Board. The trip will depart from the boat end of the jetty.
Dining
There are 4 bars and restaurants, and dining is a Bawah highlight.
Breakfast on tropical fruit with home-made yogurt, freshly baked breads and eggs.
A lunch of grilled fish and laksa, say, can be taken in a beachside Boat House or at the Grouper Bar, by the pool.
In the evenings, barman Marcin Grell whips up tropical cocktails at the Jules Verne Bar, before ushering guests downstairs to the Treetops restaurant to enjoy four or five courses (cod fish with Hainan rice and lemon grass sauce, say, or Thai-style beef salad, followed by apple pie with ginger ice cream).
