Koggala Lake, Southern Province, Sri Lanka

On a lakeside in Sri Lanka, a firebrand health retreat is breaking all the rules and bringing a new twist to the country’s colonial-style hotel scene.

Tri is Sri Lanka’s first truly contemporary sustainable luxury design hotel.

Not far from Galle Fort, on the shores of Koggala Lake (Sri Lanka’s largest natural lake) and within easy reach of the best beaches in the south, 11 suites spiral a six-acre hill of outstanding natural beauty.

Ecotourism has never been so inspiring.

The layout mirrors nature in every way: from echoing the curling and unfurling of plants to the use of local materials that complement the region’s landscapes, while the golden ratio informs the unique dimensions and placement of each structure.

Living walls, green roofs, solar arrays, edible gardens and entirely local materials unify accommodations and landscape.

Sequential spaces emanate from a central water tower that captures spectacular 360 degree views.

Creative experiences stimulate body, mind and soul, proudly showcasing Sri Lanka’s finest ingredients, materials, services and facilities.

Guided by nature, evolved with aesthetic passion, and fortified by an all-encompassing sustainable philosophy, Tri is a masterpiece of forward-thinking flair.

Alive with birds and tiny islands rich in tropical greenery, Koggala Lake in Galle District in the Southern Province feels like you’re the very first to discover this oasis of untouched nature.

Take a tour of the lagoon in our boat, find a Buddhist temple and visit cinnamon farmers at their home and the only others you might wave hello to are a fisherman or two on the water.

The abundant mangrove-fringed lake provides them with prawns, crabs, fish and even oysters.

The Communal Main House

The open-plan Main House works with the gentle slope to create a multi-tiered living space: an upper-level lounge beneath a cantilevered roof, wide sunbathing terraces, and 21-meter pool aligned with two distant lake islands; on the lower level, indoor and outdoor dining areas – all with lake views.

The Water Tower

Befitting its location in Sri Lanka’s cinnamon heartland, the Water Tower (home to three lake-view suites) is an elliptical cinnamon-clad edifice with a dramatic 360° viewing deck.

In addition to marking the site’s mathematical centre, the tower – encircled by a spiral-shaped water feature and gardens – underlines Tri’s marriage of manmade and natural into a living, useable whole.

The Library and Shala

The library and yoga shala float gently in a bamboo grove above the spa.

100% recycled jak wood gives the floors and walls a characterful warmth and its earthy cinnamon stick balustrade further helps it to blend into the surrounding nature.

The library is completed with simple contemporary furniture locally made from kumbuk, mango and teak.

Dining

From lake to table, and garden to plate, dining at Tri is as organic and seasonal as it gets.

The guiding culinary concept under chef Neil Wager’s expertise is fresh Sri Lankan fusion: contemporary, creative dishes that are as delicious and appealing as they are nutritious and local, all presented on unique handmade crockery.

Food and drink is a highlight of staying at Tri – for guests of the hotel and those keen to visit us for lunch or dinner.

Light snacks are available by the pool and in your villa.

Experience contemporary, creative dining The relaxed living room menu offers a fusion of Sri Lankan and international cuisines throughout the day, from a trio of mini hoppers and short eats to platters of fresh local sushi.

The restaurant boasts an ever-changing multi-course menu of seasonal produce and local dishes.

Starting with kurrakan roti and cashew nut butter, guests are invited on a gastronomic journey of local flavours, from a maldive fish hopper amuse-bouche to Tri cinnamon quail or lagoon crab curry, finishing with smoked wattalapam panna cotta or soursop doughnut for dessert.

Wellness

Wellbeing at Tri is rather special.

Overlooking the treetops, the two treatment rooms with cool white terrazzo walls, natural slate floors and large windows, and sheltered relaxation space, promise tranquility in which to enjoy expert Ayurvedic and other therapies.

Light and airy, the spa comprises two ensuite treatment rooms with cool white terrazzo walls, natural slate floors and large windows that catch the breeze and overlook the treetops.

A sheltered relaxation area – with handpicked granite flooring and soothing water feature is flanked by stone walls, tall bamboo and banks of scented white flowers.

The tranquil steam cavern has white terrazzo walls and an outdoor shower surrounded by nature.
