Chuzenji Onsen, Tochigi, Japan

Kai Nikko may look like a modern building from the outside, but its interior let you immerge in the tradition of a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn), with a background of local crafts and culture. Here local crafts and skills are given pride of place. Not only in resorts shops but also in its living areas. Pottery on display when entering, wonderful lacquered wood artefacts in the the restaurant, or in the cafe lounge…

There is soft lighting, diffused through shōji, dividing partitions made of wood and translucent paper that create an incredible atmosphere. Behind these separating panels stand two large windows with stunning views over Lake Chuzenji and the surrounding mountains.

Semi-private dining booths and cedar-lined baths are among the comforts guests can expect at this palatial establishment, which offers easy access to historic and natural sights, like the Tosho-gu temple in Nikko and Kegon Falls.

Located 3 hours by train from Tokyo, the hotel is ideally located to explore the surrounding region.

You just have to cross the road to enjoy a walk on the lake banks, heading towards the Italian embassy. But if you wish to investigate further afield, bicycles are available!

You will need half an hour to get to the waterfalls at Ryuzu or barely about ten minutes to reach those at Kegon and enjoy an extraordinary sight. The autumn colours, a mixture of green, red and golden tints, are delightful.

The winter snow seems also to freeze the scene for eternity… Before you leave this magical place, spend a while looking round the shops around the hotel, where you will discover local culinary specialities and craft items of astonishing beauty.

Go to JR Nikko or Tobu Nikko station then take a bus or taxi to Kai Nikko.

Yuba, or jellied tofu skin, is a Nikko specialty. At Kai Nikko, this delicacy is served on a stunning Nikko-bori engraved wooden plate along with dishes such as beef and vegetables, steamed in a custom-made bowl crafted from local Oya stone to condense their flavor.

Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

Yuba was popularized by Nikko’s many temples and shrines, which served the staple to traveling priests. Breakfasts at Kai Nikko retain this tradition with a hearty yuba casserole.

The vast dining room follows Japanese habits: divided into individual compartments that allows you more privacy for dining with an exclusive service. When the first dishes comes to you, you will easily observe how much care has gone into their creation and presentation. In a kaiseki dinner all the senses are stimulated: the tastebuds, of course, but also the eyes. The simple bouillon, perfectly prepared, the sashimi, tempura, the fish and the meat are absolutely fantastic.

Like every ryokan, Hoshino Resorts Kai Nikko has its own onsens. This experience is an opportunity for you to try the habits and customs of the country, and of course relax in a natural hot spring water (around 40 degrees). You must be careful not staying too long in bath on first times, so that your body can gradually grow accustomed to the temperature. Taking a cold shower will refresh yourself before a sauna session, to achieve these moments of well-being…

The bath halls are separated by gender and include an indoor and outdoor bath. The indoor bath is lined with aromatic cedar, while the outdoor bath is adorned with rocks to enhance the feeling of being out in the open. A second outdoor bath is also available.

Nikkō National Park located on Japan’s main island – Honshū – is considered to be one of the most beautiful parks in the country. It is also the only one to span over more than 3 prefectures: Tochigi, Gunma and Fukushima. The Oku-nikko region is renowned for being the best spot for observing the sky.

It is a marvellous place for all stargazers and starlovers, because the site is equipped here with telescopes that can be connected to your smartphone. Therefore, this technology will allow you to record these moments forever in your photo library.

Woodcraft Library

Overlooking Lake Chuzenji, the library with large windows features kanuma kumiko wood ornamentation and Nikko-bori wood engravings. Complimentary coffee is available.

Explore Nikko

Nikkō is a place to focus on during the summer for those looking for moderate temperatures. The altitude – 1300 metres – provides some freshness and ensures the body does not overheat when the mercury rises above 30°. Lake Chūzenji is nearby and also an area to visit during the summer. Situated at the foot of Mount Nantai, it is popular with the Japanese, because it is one of the few natural lakes at this altitude and it has a direct view of the mountains.

The absolute must and very fashionable thing to do when on the premises: indulge in a foot bath on returning from your walk, facing the lake, while enjoying the delicious crushed lemon or raspberry-flavoured ices – produced in the region – which the Japanese delight in during the summer.

Geta Tap dancing

Every evening at 7:30pm, on the stage bordering the restaurant, you will appreciate a lively and entertaining show. Two young ladies perform an amazingly energetic dance, explaining the origins of Nikko Getas, the traditional shoes crafted in this area. Whether you go up on stage or not, you will be invited to join in!
