Ito Onsen, Shizuoka, Japan

Ito is to Tokyo what Brighton is to London: a weekend seaside retreat within striking distance of the capital. Where Brighton offers the murky English Channel, walks along the pier and sticks of Rock, Ito boasts the sparkling Pacific, hot springs and spectacular sushi.

With 45 suites each opening onto panoramic sea views, perhaps in a nod to its namesake, the 16th century British navigator, ship-builder and samurai, William Adams (known in Japan as Miura Anjin), the tatami mats and futons you’d associate with a ryokan have been replaced by queen-sized mattresses and seagrass rugs, though other traditional offerings, like the indoor/outdoor onsen on the roof and a full kaiseki dining experience, are retained.

Located 100 minutes by train from Tokyo, Kai Anjin is a hot spring ryokan in the coastal city of Ito, with rooms and penthouse bath halls that overlook the ocean. In homage to its eponymous 17th century English navigator, better known outside Japan as William Adams, the ryokan has been designed as an art space with a maritime theme.
All rooms offer ocean views and featuring maritime artwork that will make guests want to unfurl a nautical map and gaze out at the Pacific with a telescope. No two rooms feature the same design.

Meals feature British-inspired fare—such as Japanese-style fish and chips, and citrus-steamed seafood—made with locally sourced seafood that is in season. Guests are seated in semi-private booths, each ornamented with distinctive designs.

The ryokan’s restaurant serves “Japanese Fish’n’Chips”, a signature dish of Ito, as well high tea on a three-tiered tray, and roasted fish with citrus using English cooking traditions.

Dinners consist of multi-course kaiseki meals that include visually pleasing dishes made with seasonal ingredients.

Breakfast is a set meal that features a soup inspired by the traditional fisherman’s breakfast, flavored simply with sea bream broth, salt, soy sauce, and ginger.

The penthouse bath halls offer a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Beautiful color gradations paint the sky at dusk, while at night, the moon is reflected in the water as a shimmering strip of light. Each bath hall has a granite indoor bath and a rock-adorned outdoor bath.

Yuagari Lounge

Located adjacent to the bath halls, the lounge connects to the San Buena Deck, where guests may cool off in the refreshing ocean breeze, drink in hand, after a dip in the baths.

Explore Izu

One of the best ways to discover this beautiful area is by walking along the Jogasaki coast, just a 20-minute drive from Kai Anjin. Looking for an easy stroll? Head to the section around the Kadowakizaki Suspension Bridge, which hangs 23 metres above a gorge in the cliffs. The surrounding area is a great place to clamber over dark volcanic rocks and admire sweeping ocean vistas.

San Buena Deck

This spacious area pays homage to the deck of the San Buena Ventura, the first Western ship built in Japan. Enjoy food and beverages that hearken back to the Age of Discovery.

Just over an hour south-west of Tokyo, the Izu peninsula juts out from the Honshu mainland forming a paradise for beach-lovers, surfers, divers and hikers – with sweeping views of islands and fishing boats on the vast Pacific Ocean. It’s a great place to get away from it all after the buzz of Tokyo.
